Springtime S.O.S.

Last day of February, 32 degrees and snow on the ground.
The air is crisp and clean -
sound travels far.

The birds sing a song in Morse code.
Nuthatches, drumming woodpeckers, chipping titmice and chickadees -
they provide the dots,
While the plaintive "coo's" of the Mourning Doves simulate the dashes.

They heard my S.O.S message: "Tired of winter. Stop."

Their reply:
"Spring is coming. Stop.
Be patient. Stop.
Keep feeding us. Don't stop."

Sweet. Those birds cut right to the chase with their messages, don't they?

Kelly - Thanks. When I stood outside yesterday morning, filling the feeders, it was a like a preview for spring - the birds were really going at it (singing I mean)!

Kerri - Message received! Thanks for the comment.

Jain - If only we could learn to communicate as directly with each other as the animals do!

Hi Heather! Cute post. You have such a clever imagination accompanied by some sweet feeder pictures! Yes, we're all winter weary, but spring is coming! I heard a report that the Red-winged Blackbirds have been spotted in Massachusetts! Truly harbingers of spring in my neck of the woods, they will be a welcomed sight! ~karen

I love their reply.

Spring is coming for us. The first grackles showed up in the yard yesterday.

Your photos are stunning, as usual. This post made me laugh. I wonder what they are saying about us?

Karen - Thank you! I would LOVE to hear/see some Red-winged Blackbirds. I thought I heard one the other day, but I think my mind was just playing tricks on me.

James - Thanks. I haven't seen any grackles around here yet, but they don't usually show up this early.

Aluajala - Hee hee - glad you liked it.

Sandy - Thank you. Those birds probably wonder what all our complaining is about - at least we have a roof over our heads most of the day!
