Ferny Friday

I have one more post in the works about my birding weekend at the Wilds, but I'm taking a break to share these fern photos with you. This is a cinnamon fern that I planted last year that has gotten HUGE - like, out of control huge. It's even overshadowing some neighboring ferns! Does anyone know if ferns can be divided like hostas or lilies? I don't think this can spend another year in its current spot at its current size because it's just gotten too big!

Anyway, without further ado, I give you the photos....

Hi Heather. Most ferns are propagated by bulbils or spores BUT the hardy types can be propagated by cutting the rhizomes into sections or divide the crowns in spring. Have fun. Frank.

Hey Heather nice pics of the ferns. I liked the variety that you displayed today.

Andy - Thank you. The image you mention is a crop from the original... I wanted to focus on the diagonal lines of the fronds.

Craig - Thank you so much!

Frank - Thank you for the feedback. I'll have to give that a try next spring!

Crista - Thank you very much. It was nice to be able to get so many different images from just one plant.

Nice fern shots, Heather. It's funny, I just ran across a great colony of Cinnamon Fern and Interrupted Fern growing intermingled - not that common to see - and was going to blog them. Ferns are ferntastic!

Your fern, though - might it not be Lady Fern, Athyrium filix-femina?

Jim

Michele - Thanks. I knew you especially would enjoy these after the nice fern collage you put together a while back!

John - Hello, and thanks for stopping by! I'm glad you liked them!

Jim - Hmmm, I'm not familiar with Interrupted Fern, guess I'm going to have to check that one out on your blog! As for my fern ID, anything is possible. I thought the ID tag for this fern said Cinnamon Fern, but I've since lost the tag, and it certainly does NOT put up those Cinnamon stick-looking shoots like I've seen in other pictures of Cinnamon Fern.

Kelly - Thank you so much. There is something very special about ferns...

Shelley - Now don't be silly. I want to see those Michigan ferns of yours!
