Signs

sign n. - Something that suggests the presence or existence of a fact, condition, or quality.

Signs are around us everywhere. I don't just mean the written or graphic variety, but also, of course, the natural variety. Here are some signs that I noticed while outside a few weeks ago.

This nibbled corn, for example, is a sign that the squirrels actually DO eat something besides the bird seed! How do I know this is the work of a squirrel? Because I watched the nibbling with my own eyes.

This big pile of wood is a sign that we are ready to meet our heating needs for the winter.

The sight of this vehicle across the road from our place, depending on what date the calendar reads, either means someone is scouting a hunting spot, or that hunting season is in progress. Either way, it's probably best to avoid walking in the woods when this vehicle is parked here.

What kinds of signs are you seeing in your neck of the woods?

I like this post Heather! I can't believe my squirrels actually ate some of that dried corn too! I got the videos on Youtube. Don't you hate to see hunters?? I see there is a four wheeler in the back of that truck also. They race through the woods with them, shooting their guns..Ha! Not sure if they really do but I bet they do.
Since I can't get out I guess the signs I notice now are the footprints in the snow. Now I can see where the Opossum walked at night and the foxes. I just saw my crippled one a few minutes ago. But I scared him. Darn it. I moved the curtain too fast. but thank God he's still around. take care. We are expecting some bad weather tonight.

I love the nibbled corn photo. Beautifully done. My husband will also love to see the photo of your firewood. That stack is impressive.

What else am I seeing in the woods? We have an adorable little otter that runs across our lawn and jumps into our half-frozen pond every morning. One of these days I'll get a photo of him.

That is an IMPRESSIVE stock pile of wood you have there! I loved the photos of the squirrels corn treat - I think you are spoiling them - ha,ha!

Ginny - I've never actually seen the 4-wheeler out of that truck, and honestly I don't think anyone is being irresponsible with it, at least not around our immediate area. As far as I can tell, the hunters who come into our neighborhood are respectful and nice, so I have no qualms with them being here.
I will be looking forward to seeing some tracks in the snow when we get more of it. I like seeing the bird prints in the snow, for sure.

Erica - We'll probably go through all that wood by, oh, the end of January or the beginning of February. Guess it depends on how cold the temps get. But there's more where that came from.
You have an otter that runs across your lawn?! How cool is that! I'd love to see a photo if you ever get one.

Shelley - Us spoiling the squirrels? NEVER! The squirrels taking advantage of every bit of food they can find? YOU BET!
