Sometimes the squirrels are "good" and they actually eat the corn that we put out for them:
But most of the time they are "naughty" and eat the bird seed. Such is life in the woods!
By the way, since it was the first weekend of Project Feederwatch, here is the list of birds I counted at the feeders this weekend (showing the highest number seen at one time for each speices):

10 mourning doves! Interesting....we have them here too but I've never seen them at our feeders. Don't let those squirrels eat you out of house and home this winter. I know from experience they can plow through the bird seed! I hope you'll keep us posted as Project Feeder Watch continues.
Squirrels are fun to watch though. I saw one fall out of a tree yesterday. They were chasing each other way too fast and I guess he slipped. But he was okay. I have lots of those Mourning Doves. They come down to eat all the time too. But I throw the food on the ground so all the birds have to eat that way. Except for the seed bell I have on my window. At least some of the small ones can eat at that. So far the squirrels haven't reached it. Great photos Heather!
We have a lot of the same birds at our feeder now. No squirrels to speak of yet. They come in front the woods quite often, but don't live in the yard.

Monika - Mourning Doves are consistently one of the most populous birds at our feeders. They like to feed on the ground, too, so they're not always all on the feeders at the same time. And don't worry, the squirrels WILL eat us out of house and home! I'll try to post as many Feederwatch updates as I can!
Ginny - Our squirrels chase each other a lot, too. They take lots of flying leaps from the feeders to the tree branches, and one of these days I just know that one of the smaller branches is going to break from a squirrel that has on a little too much winter weight!
Sandy - Consider yourself lucky if you don't have squirrels invading your feeders!
