Halloween Pumpkin Cake

Tonight my cake went from plain old bundt cake...

... to a Halloween Pumpkin Cake!

I don't usually consider myself much of a "theme cake" baker, but I saw this online the other day and couldn't resist. I like to bake from scratch as much as I can, so I didn't use a box mix cake like the recipe recommends. Instead I tried something special... it's a "secret ingredient" cake! Click here for the cake recipe to find out what the secret ingredient is (recipe will open in a new window). (Dave, if you're reading this before the breakfast gets started, don't spoil it!)

I know there are going to be plenty of other delicious treats at our potluck breakfast. I can't wait.

Happy Halloween, everyone!

PS. I just looked at the recipe. Let us know how it tastes. The "secret ingredient" is, uh, interesting...???

Michele - Thanks! I might win for best presentation, but I've heard of several other show-stopping items that will be there, so we'll see. Regarding the taste, I dipped a spoon in the batter to get a taste, and I also sampled some crumbs after it was baked, and it's pretty good. It's very spiced, so that comes through the most. I wouldn't guess the secret ingredient if I didn't already know what it was. I actually encountered a similar recipe for cupcakes a while back, and that made me very curious, so I was glad to have an opportunity to try this cake out. Besides, I wanted something kind of orange-y in color.

Wow! I never in a million years would have guessed to put "that ingredient" into a cake! Let us know how it is!

I just happened to visit your link from Lona's blog, and what a cute cake this is! My 12 yr old son would really get a kick out of it...and I just happen to have cake ingredients, except for cream cheese and an ice cream cone! At first I didn't know what the stem was made of, and that prompted me to follow the link to the recipe page. A very sweet post, indeed:-)

Yum!!!! Happy Halloween to you.....what a delicious and fun looking cake. I wish I had tuned in sooner. I might still have time to make one tomorrow... (love your photos as well). I'm finally starting to feel better--not well, just better.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I'm surprised at the number of folks who seem to find cake for breakfast to be an odd thing... Of COURSE cake for breakfast!!! The cake didn't have too many takers during the actual breakfast buffet b/c there were several other actual "breakfast" items available (egg casserole, french toast casserole, french toast cupcakes w/BACON!, cinnamon rolls, etc), but I left the cake in the fridge at work over the weekend, and it was gone by lunch time on Monday. It was actually quite delicious, and I think any trace of the secret ingredient (tomato soup, for those who didn't follow the link) had totally mellowed out of it by Monday.

Meg - I'm thinking about making pumpkin soup myself sometime soon.

Frank - You think cake for breakfast is weird, and I think baked beans, mushrooms and tomatoes for breakfast is a bit odd... ;) Variety is the spice of life, as they say.

Jan - It's funny, the "stem" of the pumpkin is really important - my husband said it really brought the look together. Too bad I had to buy a box of 24 ice cream cones for just one stinking cone. Oh well. Such are the sacrifices of a baker!

Kelly - Happy belated Halloween to you too. I hope by the time you read this you'll be almost 100% better! Did you end up trying out the cake?
